ABOUT THE WALKER
Q: Do you use treats?
A: Yes! We do not use cheap commercial treats though and instead used chopped chicken, hotdog sausages, dried liver, tiny pieces of cheese or if using shop bought treats, high quality grain free brands like Fish4Dogs. Basically anything really smelly, and exciting for your dog! If your dog has any dietary requirements we can discuss this at our initial consultation.
Q: What does positive reinforcement and force free mean?
A: Positive reinforcement is rewarding a desired behaviour which makes the behaviour more likely to be repeated. I adopt a force free methodology which means I do not use aversive tools like choke chains or shock collars etc and do not use punishment like shouting, jerking the lead etc. It could also be described as a "hands off" approach which means I do not use fear, coercion, or pain to get the results I want.
Q: What did you do before you were a dog walker?
A: I worked as a Support Worker with adults with learning disabilities supporting people to live independent lives in their homes.
Q: Why did you become a dog walker and pet sitter?
A: After rescuing Ollie our English Springer Spaniel in 2014 I became interested in canine behaviour and training. I began volunteering with Moorlands Dog Rescue and mentoring under a force free trainer and certified behaviourist. I have always loved being out with our dogs and decided it would be a great way to get more experience with different breeds and behaviours and an enjoyable way to support my learning whilst offering me more practical, hands on experience with a variety of dogs.
Q: Do you have any formal qualifications?
A: I am currently working towards my Advanced Diploma in Canine Behaviour Management, and have both a Canine First Aid Certificate which is a theory based course, and a practical Canine First Aid training which I update once a year. I am always continually developing my practice by attending seminars and workshops.
Q: Are you trained in dog first aid?
A: Yes, I hold a theory Canine First Aid Certificate and renew my one day practical Canine First Aid every year.
Q: What do you carry on you when out on walks?
A: Depending on the dog and weather, I carry a spare lead, poo bags, treats, water and a collapsible bowl. I also keep your keys on me, along with my phone with emergency contact details in.
